GxP is a collective term for good practice requirements used in regulated activities. The ‘x’ stands for the particular area: for example, manufacturing in GMP or distribution in GDP.
What does GxP cover?
GxP brings together several disciplines with a shared purpose: protecting people and supporting reliable products, processes and evidence. The requirements that apply depend on the activity, product and jurisdiction.
In medicines, familiar examples include Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), Good Distribution Practice (GDP), Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and Good Pharmacovigilance Practice (GVP). Each has its own scope and guidance; GxP is not a single regulation or universal certificate.
GMP and GDP: where should I start?
Start with GMP if your work involves manufacturing, packaging, testing or the quality systems supporting medicines production. GMP focuses on consistently producing and controlling medicines to the required quality.
Start with GDP if your work involves wholesale distribution, storage or transport. GDP focuses on maintaining the quality and integrity of medicines through the supply chain. The two disciplines meet at important handovers, so many roles benefit from understanding both.
The ideas that connect good practice
Across regulated work, several ideas recur: clear responsibilities, people trained for their tasks, controlled procedures, suitable equipment and facilities, reliable records, and a proportionate response when things go wrong.
Data integrity is part of that foundation. Records need to be trustworthy throughout their lifecycle so that decisions can be based on reliable evidence. The MHRA’s GxP data integrity guidance is a useful primary reference.
